Is it selfish to get induced?

Question

I’ve had an incredibly difficult pregnancy and at 37w + 5d, I feel like I just can’t go on. Is it selfish at all that I’m considering getting induced as soon as it’s safe for my baby? I want to do whatever is best for my baby so obviously I won’t do it if it poses additional risks. I’m just so fatigued, sick, uncomfortable, you name it.

I’m aware of the minimum requirements to get induced. My specific doctor won’t do it until I’m at least 39 weeks.

It’s not selfish to be done. The last few weeks are brutal. 
But most doctors won’t induce until at least 39 weeks with no issues. My clinic will not do it until due date. 
I was induced medically at 37w4d and elective at 40w1d.

I don’t think it’s selfish but I personally feel that (most) babies will come when they are ready, why rush them. Unless there is a medical reason to do so.

Not selfish. But as stated by other commenter, most doctors won't induce until 39 weeks for an elective induction. I'd talk to your doctor at your next appointment and see what he says.

It isn't selfish, but I hated my inductions and wouldn't choose it when it only saves you a very few days when you're likely to go into labor naturally anyway. I had to be induced all of my pregnancies and didn't like it at all, 1 I had a level 4 tear and 2 ended up in c sections. It isn't judgment against you or thinking you're selfish  or anything, but from a practical standpoint  if you're trying to save yourself discomfort, it may not be the best course.

The last weeks are tough. Most won’t do it unless you go past your due date or at least 39 weeks. I believe if baby didn’t come, there is a reason and trying to rush them may make the labor worse. My second was sunny side up and I was having contractions for 2 days. They admitted me and then discharged me when they didn’t pick up (I was past 39 weeks) They did give me the option to break my water and see if that helps but they told me that if they do that, she’ll have to be out one way or another within 24 hrs. I said I’ll give her till her due date. The following day, my labor picked up and it went very smooth. I’m not sure if I would’ve had the same experience if I tried to force her out before she was ready.
This time I’m having a medical induction at 37 weeks (GDM on insulin and gestational hypertension). Although I’m excited to meet my baby in 4 weeks and part of me is glad that I will know exactly when to go to the hospital (it’s an hour away) and will have a plan set for the other kids but I am a bit anxious about the induction itself and I wish I could just go into labor naturally.

Not at all. I had an elective induction with my first two kiddos. I’m pregnant now and will most likely do it again. My labors were fast and easy 🤷🏼‍♀️

Take it from a mama that was 12 days late delivering her baby...it’s SO special to go into labor naturally. While I was absolutely miserable, I wouldn’t regret that feeling of my body knowing what to do. 
Also, your not selfish. It’s a VERY natural feelings for most mamas. Do what’s best for you and your baby!

Without a medical reason, it might be tough to get a dr to do it. 
Inductions can take a LONG time and you need to be in the hospital for all of it. It can also be extremely painful.
Also, if baby and your body aren’t ready, an induction may not work and you could very well end up having a csection. 
It’s up to you what you want to do. Those last weeks of pregnancy are super uncomfortable. I personally wouldn’t do an elective induction for the reasons above, but only you know what makes sense for your family.
