Do you keep peanut butter in the fridge or cupboard/counter

My husband and I are constantly arguing about this. My family kept it in the cupboard growing up, so it was always soft. I never got sick from food poisoning. My husband insists that it should be kept in the fridge. I was making him a peanut butter sandwich for his lunch this morning, and the peanut butter was hard as a rock, so hard to spread on the bread. He left oton the fridge overnight. I guess I could have put it in the microwave for a few seconds, but oh well.
