When did you start filing/biting newborn nails?

My LO is just over a week and I’ve been keeping her in sleepers with the hand covers. Just curious when I should start on her nails.

I clipped my son’s the day after he was born. His nails were so long, and he’d scratched up his face inutero. I was going to keep the baby mitts on him for a while, but my midwives and pediatrician advised against that because it is important for babies to be able to feel things with their hands and develop their nerves there.

Clipping them will only give them a sharper edge. 
My pediatrician specifically told us not to as it can make them very sharp and cause baby to cut himself worse than he already is. 
Baby nail file is the way to go. It’s been working well for us.

Probably as soon as they got long. I would never ever bite my kids nails. I don’t even bite my own. 🤮
Using clippers is simple with a bit of practice. Newborns aren’t as squirmy as toddlers so get it down pat now. 😂😭

We started the first week he was born. They make glass nail files that don’t scratch the skin but file the nails down nicely. We found success with those. 
The mittens are actually not good to be used very often since that’s the only way baby can get sensory input and interaction with their world. 
Biting nails can also cause a broken even sharper nail and rip it down way too far causing a bleed or infection so that’s not a recommended method either. I’m definitely guilty of doing it once or twice though! They make electric nail files for babies as well which I’ve heard many parents love!

I cut my baby’s nails at about a week old I think. They were so long when he was born but I couldn’t cut them yet because the skin underneath was almost fused to the nail. I had to wait until they separated

We cut our daughter’s the day she was born because she was scratching herself and me. We use baby nail scissors instead of clippers or filing.
