We had this exact thing. It appeared from nothing to full blown in just two days. Doctor said it’s a skin infection and prescribed antibiotic cream (Fucidin). It’s been twenty four hours and the redness has definitely improved. The risk of leaving it is that it may develop into systemic inflammation and lead to fever which is to be avoided at all costs in babies this age.

Yup looks like heat rash my son had it too! I kept him in just a diaper as often as I could and patted it with a cold washcloth a few times a day. No lotion or oil on it because it can clog the sweat glands further and make it worse. It started going away after a couple of days and was completely gone in a week.
