Rotavirus Vaccine cause issues in your child?

Hi ladies. My little guy is due for his first rotavirus vaccine. He was IUGR and born small (4lbs 8oz) and we have been through it. He had some stomach issues and reflux that we finally seem to have a hold on. He also has an inguinal hernia where his intestines come through his abdominal wall into his groin. There is a risk of intestine issues with this vaccine also. If I remember the rotavirus vaccine messed with both of my other kid’s stomachs bad. My older son had diarrhea for at least a week. Did anyone else have issues with this vaccine? Would I be awful to skip this one for him? I do all of the others but he needs surgery at 6 months on the hernia and the thought of his stomach getting messed with badly scares me. Thanks!

I completely believe in vaccinations, but the Rotavirus is not a required vaccine. It’s an optional one to prevent extreme diarrhea in babies due to the rotavirus. My nephew had a horrible reaction to it, so we decided not to give it to our son (4 months). We talked to our pediatrician and she said it was fine to go without as long as he wasn’t going to be in daycare. It’s also not a lifetime immunity like other vaccines, it’s only beneficial for babies up to 8 months. I would talk to your pediatrician and go with the decision that works for your family and your baby health. For us it was a no.

I’d talk to your doctor about your specific circumstances, including your family history, your baby’s medical issues, the risk of illness if your baby or older kids are at daycare/school, weighing up whether the consequences of the actual illness would be significant enough to outweigh the possible side effects of vaccination, and looking at any consequences of not vaccinating in your specific location (eg would it be hard to enrol in daycare), etc.
Neither of my kids had a reaction to it as far as I could tell.

My daughter, is similar to yours, tiny at birth, still tiny, tummy issues and AR (it's a lot better now - 2.5 months). We did give her the rotovirus vaccine and after she got it, she immediately vomited. Dr. Saw it and I thought she no longer had the protection, he said it was fine and she should be ok. She vomited the day of at night as well but after that she was fine. I also believe in vaccines but have been told the same, rotovirus is not required, it's a nice to have. Good luck

I’m skipping the 2nd dose. It caused a silent reflux flare up and I had to get my LO on nexium because he was screaming bloody murder for a week straight.

My little girl got an upset stomach and cried a lot that day I have heard of babies getting diarrhoea. I would talk to your doctor about it :)

It had no effect on my son but my daughter did have some sort of a reaction. She didn’t poop for 5 days after she got it, threw up and when she did poop it was extremely foul smelling. She seemed to have digestive discomfort too. All symptoms cleared up by a week though...

We also had a smaller baby with reflux issues and we skipped rota while getting the others. My husband is French and it’s not recommended there because of gastric safety concerns.

Thank you all so much. I decided against it. I hope it was the right decision since it’s too late for him to get it now. We are meeting with the Gi doctor for him Tuesday to try to get him some relief from his reflux/stomach issues. Thank you all for your input ❤️
