IV/ Hep Lock in Labor

Nicki

Has anyone had a labor where they refused ANY intervention? Everyone says a hep lock is hospital policy, but they teach you in nursing school that you can’t do anything to a patient without consent. I’m wondering if you’re able to refuse an IV and hep lock. Are they able to refuse treatment if a hep lock is hospital policy and you refuse?

Based on how the labor goes before I go to the hospital, I may want the IV, but I’m shooting for no IV or hep lock. We don’t have a birth center close to where we live or midwifes in the area, or I would opt for that. They seem to listen to what you personally want more than a hospital.

I feel like the hospital pressures women to get an IV or hep lock when it’s not always necessary, and I want to know my options.
