Extreme itching

Last night I woke up with extreme itching in both hands.it resumed a bit in a few hours. It's the first time that happens to me but I've heard of cholestasis. Is that a reason to go to the ER or should I wait for symptoms to last in time and to worst? Thanks in advamce
