Is it weird to put an air tag tracker on 5 year olds backpack?

Question

In a debate right now because my 5 year old is starting kindergarten this year, she’s always been home with me and hasn’t been to school yet due to COVID. 
I want to get an air tag or tile tracker thing and put it on a keychain on her backpack, since she’s too young to work a cellphone. 
With how crazy the world is I would just feel safer knowing where she is. Once she older like middle school I’d stop using one as she’d be old enough to have a phone and text me etc. 
Family members saying this is helicopter parenting.

I think it comes down to what you’re comfortable with. Putting a tag like that on a young child, absolutely. When they’re teenagers, likely too much and let them have some space (when they’re old enough to use a cell phone to properly call for help in a distress time.)
I’d say go for it, it’s a great idea I never thought of! Especially for a young child just going to and from school. 
Helicopter parenting would be calling their school every hour to check in on them.

My nieces and nephews got watches that track. That way it was on the child and not something they could drop.

I was just about to say get them something to wear! Just saw a post about a watch thats genius!  My kid will toss her backpack the second she gets to school so i wouldnt know jow reliable that would be. And mama BE A HELICOPTER!!! how fucking relieved would u be if your baby got taken and they found her right away because you put a little tracker on her!?!? You dont need to live your life scared and keep your kids locked up in the house forever but plain and aimple this world is disgusting and there are men that watch children for weeks knowing their schedule to take them and do god only knows what! So give yourself the piece of mind and keep them safe its your job!!
Just look at that little girl in florida the ither day!  He watched her for a few weeks! So mom took her to the bus stop wveryday and the day she didnt take her the man tried to kidnap her!

It's not a crazy idea if she has to walk home from school. It would also be good for when you go out to the mall or big, crowded places but it would have to be something she can wear and not a backpack. Since she's only 5 I can see how it would be helpful in certain situations, but you also have to consider that most kids do just fine without that. If you end up doing it just make sure to stop once she's older because then it would definitely be too much.

If my kid is anywhere without me they will always have something that can track their movements until they are old enough to have a cell phone and even then I’d have a tracker on it tbh. I wouldn’t check it constantly of course just in case of an emergency or them ignoring me!

I would say, it is a slippery slope. You have to very knowingly stop at one point. But most likely it is hard.
I personally wouldn't put one one and trust my kid until the kid has given me reason not to. But that is my opinion.

That would only track the backpack and not the child. Shouldn’t you know where your child is all the time at that age? Heaven forbid something terrible happens like a kid napping, the backpack will eventually be dumped but it may help to know what direction they are heading.
