To induce or not to induce
Went to the doctor yesterday for my 39 week appointment. We had an ultrasound because babies been measuring ahead and she’s estimated to be a whopping 8lbs 11oz (give or take). Doctor feels it’s likely accurate as babies gained exactly a half a lb a week since my last US at 37 weeks and I’m “all baby”. I have to agree, i think if shes a pound off it’s likely I’m the upward direction! I’m not GD, I think I just make big babies.
I asked about an elective induction because I’m not a small girl but I’m also not very big either and I have very narrow hips. I also have had surgery on my hips. Anyhow, she said I am on the cusp of an elective csection... and didn’t find an elective induction to be unreasonable but she wanted to run it by the other providers at their meeting today as she may not be the doctor on...
I am a nurse and i know that women have natural births with big babies all the time. I also know that bigger babies can have an increased risk of tearing, shoulder dystocia and other related birth injuries. Luckily baby’s head is bigger than her belly, reducing the risk some. I also know that a failed induction could just land me in the OR - but i feel like it’s my best shot at actually having a vaginal delivery. I also know that not having that “squeeze” might land baby in the NICU for transient respiratory dysfunction, she’d be the biggest baby in there LOL
The most concerning thought of a csection is that I’m also high risk for PPD and tend to be very depressed after surgery (historically). I also have an unidentifiable mass that gets monitored in my pelvis that could also create a problem. (That’s a story for another day!)
I’m grateful this doctor is going to advocate for me (they schedule pregnant moms with all the doctors in this practice since you won’t know who’ll deliver you). I just hope they agree.
Ultimately I want to do whatever they feel is best for baby and I. I just needed to put this out there in the world to get it out from swirling in my head. Fingers crossed for good news today!
