Why do people hate nicknames? But then give their kid a long or weird name?

My parents named me Alexandria. It's not a bad name and is quite beautiful. But I very much hate being called Alexandria. My family (except my parents) calls me Alex and my friends call me Lexi. But my parents hate that I prefer my nicknames. Yet they gave me a name that can have literally a million variations of nicknames??

My husband has a 2 letter name and hates it and wants to give our kids long names that have lots of nickname options and I agree with him.

So why give your kids a name that has an obvious nickname if you don't want them to be called by that nickname? I see so many people like:

"How do I stop people from calling my baby Sophie instead of her real name Sophia??"

"My baby's name is Allison but I don't want people calling her Aly or Allie!"

"I hate it when people call my son Sam or Sammy when his name is Samuel!"

Like... Why is that a problem? Your kid is most likely going to want to be called by a nickname anyway, especially if the name is unusual or uncommon or just plain too long. (Gwenneth/Gwen, Geniveve/Jen/Jenny, Makenzie/Kenzie etc...)

Why give yourself the trouble? What if your kid doesn't end up liking their name? What if it's hard to pronounce? I totally understand loving unusual names and that's okay, but if you're just going to get upset at people for it then why even bother? It kind of comes with the territory.

We love some VERY.... out there... names lol and we've accepted the fact that our kids may not like them or they'll prefer nicknames or people will pronounce them incorrectly. And that's not really a problem. (We like Ariadne, Arrowyn, Archimedes and Rohan lmfao)
