Am i a bad person

So I’m in college and me and this guy have been dating 3 months now, we haven’t had sex (I’m a virgin and super paranoid) but we do mess around. We really became more like friends mid dating because we realized we started on the wrong foot and now we’re really close except some of the stuff that happened between us has held me from developing deeper feelings for him other than friendship and i expressed that to him. He’s not a bad guy i just realized he prob can’t do the things i want in the way i want, he tries but he doesn’t put the effort in. I know he’s trying w me though. But then (happened yesterday) he told me he loved me in a text.

I didn’t want to lie to him so i was honest but i feel like it hurt him. And he just changed the subject after:/ what should i do
