Do newborns need sun/sunlight?

I’m a FTM to be and I heard my MIL say that newborns/babies have to be in the sun/sunlight at least 15 min a day. Is this true mamas? I haven’t found much about this on the internet.

I would imagine she’s talking about for vitamin D. If you’re formula feeding it’ll have that, if you’re breast feeeding you need to give your baby D drops.

It is very helpful for them to be out in the sun for 15 to 20 minutes before 2 PM every day and that helps reset their circadian rhythm so they sleep better at night. It’s not a necessity, but in cases were babies aren’t sleeping well, it helps.￼

Nope! I wouldn’t where we live bc babies shouldn’t be exposed to sun in that manner. Their skin is super sensitive to sun and you cannot use sunscreen. 
They get vitamin D either by drops (if you breastfeed you need to supplement) or formula. So either way their nutritional needs are met. 
As for the circadian rhythm, we never took our girl outside and it was just fine. No problems with sleep. But we used the Little Z’s sleep program at birth. Holy Southern US humidity - there was no way we spent time outside. 🥵🥵🥵

They don’t have to be. But my baby was a little jaundiced, they recommended I put him in front of windows whenever I could to get the indirect sunlight, maybe that’s what she’s talking about?

If you're breastfeeding baby will need vit d drops, or about 20min sunshine a day.
If you're formula feeding, no need to worry.
Sunshine won't hurt babe, just be cautious of overexposure.

It's good for them to get a little morning or evening sun. I wouldn't do anything mid- day because they burn so easily.

In certain cases its necessary. But not every baby. It was July/August when my son was a NB and where I live its 100-110 those months. So I just stripped him to a diaper and put him in front of the window for 15-20 minutes. But not in direct sunlight.  He had jaundice, which is why I did it. Cleared it right up.

Sun is good for everyone. My kids are very fair and as babies we did 5 minute spurts of full sun or lots of indirect sunlight.

Yes they do need sunlight, do don’t have to go outside to expose them, you can open a window let the sun hit them for a bit, my kid had jaundice and the dr told me she should be expose to sun, that it’s good for them

If you're baby is jaundiced, then yes. The best natural cure of jaundice is UV light. It also gives them vitamin D. My son ended up needing to go to the hospital for bililights because when he was born there was no sun to speak of and he had jaundice. Even once his vibrates were under control, he stayed sightly yellow until around 4 months. My daughter had a touch of jaundice, but was born in May so we had her outside every day and it cleared up quickly.
