Should marriage/engagement be discussed before the proposal?

My opinion is that partners should have discussed the idea of getting married to each other before proposing. I don’t think it’s ever a decision that should be made on the fly after somebody proposed to you and you have to think of a quick answer.

I don’t think it takes the romance or surprise out of it at all. The surprise comes from the when and where. Not the idea that somebody wants to marry you.

Surprise proposal videos make me sooo uncomfortable it’s not funny.
