How fast do u dilate?

Question

So i went to the ER today because i had some bright red blood and some mucus. They checked my cervix and im only half a cm dilated. Which is great cuz I'm only 30wks and 3days. But I am a little concerned on if i am dilating already how long will it take before I go into activate labor?
Should i check my cervix at home as well? Just in case i have dilated more?

You do not need to check your cervix.
There’s no point.
You could be dilated for weeks before going into labor.

I agree with the other mamas on here. It’s too risky to check your own cervix. 
I will say that I’ve heard from my mama friends that they’ve been dilated at 2-3 cm for weeks & haven’t progressed until much later. 
My personal story with my first child is on a Monday, I went in for a cervical check & was completely closed & 0% effaced. The next day, I was at 7cm & 90% effaced. I don’t know what made the difference. Baby comes when baby comes. ❤️

I was dilated at 35 weeks and was induced at 39+3. It doesn’t mean anything. Labor can start even if your 0.

I was 3cm with my first for 6 weeks before active labor.  Second one same thing.

I was as scared as you. At 30+3 i was 1cm dilated and panicked i will go into preterm labor. At 34+5 i was 1,5 cm.. and with bad BH and some real contractions lately i am now 3cm At 38+4. So dont worry, it probably wont go fast. Ive been walking more lately since i had to rest most of my pregnancy and havent been active, bouncing on a ball, ate pineapple,  been active and nothing works for dilatation and labor to start. It will happen when our bodies and babies are ready :)

No, absolutely do not check your cervix. You could cause your cervix to dilate more, cause an infection or rupture your membranes.
