What do y'all use when making cookies from scratch?

People always look at me weird when I use the recipe my great grandmother taught me and my sister to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch. We don't use butter, we use crisco vegetable shortening.

I think most older generations used shortening or lard because it was easier to get than fresh butter and it lasted longer without having to be refrigerated.

I always think the best cookies call for half of each! I use butter more because it's better for you than the shortening, but when I want an extra special cookie, I'll add half shortening!

For me it depends on the cookie. My oatmeal cookies use shortening but my vanilla pudding chocolate chip cookie uses butter. I also would not use shortening for my short bread cookies, but totally for chocolate peppermint cookies! I don’t have issues with either. It just means the texture and consistency will be different.
