Induction at 42 weeks

Irina

After a sweep at 41 weeks and losing my mucus plug throughout the week after that and still not going into labor, I got induced at 42 weeks. They started pitocin at around 10:15am, gradually increasing it every half hour or so. I was already at 5 cm at that point! At 1:30 I was still not contracting regularly and the pain was very manageable, so they broke my water. I was 6 cm when they did that. After that things got intense very quickly and I asked for epidural, but the anesthesiologist had just stepped into the OR so I had to wait a while for him, maybe an hour? Time had no meaning at that point lol. I asked for fentanyl while I waited, it helped me relax during contractions. I started feeling my body push with contractions but I made myself relax best I could cuz I really needed that epidural. He finally came in and quickly got it in. My right side favored the numbing but about 20 minutes after I got it I was mostly numb and ready to push. I pushed for 22 minutes when they suddenly told me to stop pushing and get on my back (I was on my left side pushing). A bunch of people ran in and it got chaotic. Turns out my sons left shoulder got stuck on his way out and they had to reach in and maneuver him out. A nurse was pushing on my stomach to help him out. Even with the epidural the pain was so bad I screamed. He was stuck for just two minutes though, any more and there would’ve been more problems. Once he was out they immediately cut his cord and put him on my chest for a minute before taking him to the warmer to examine him. They feared a broken shoulder or collarbone but thank God he was ok! He was born just over 2 hours after breaking my water. He weighed 9lbs and 4 oz and was 21.5 inches long! He was back at his birth weight by day 4! He’s now two weeks old and breastfeeding is going amazingly, I’m almost done bleeding, and getting used to having three boys now lol.
