Anyone else not like your SO’s family?

Question

I absolutely loathe spending time with my wife’s family. Her mother is actual garbage (I have some stories that would make you book a therapy session) and her brother is just…annoying. It’s not his fault, he’s just a kid and grew up with a terrible mother so I get why he is the way he is. But I just can’t stand being around him either. It’s really important to my wife to remain close with her brother, and she often has to make trips out to see her mother (who lives two states away) because her mother has bank accounts and cars in my wife’s name. My wife got upset recently and told me how much it frustrates her that I don’t go with her to visit her family. Now, I work two jobs and I’m in school, so I don’t have a lot of free time as it is. And I don’t earn vacation time. So time off is lost income, and I rarely take time off. 
But, despite all my excuses, I want to make my wife happy.  So we planned a camping trip with her family and man….it was rough. Apparently I did such a good job faking it that my MIL invited us out again next month 🥴🥴🥴

Waves of nausea and vitriol consume me whenever I even think of them. My hatred burns with the fire of 1000 sun's covered in a million tones of gasoline and ignited by an acetylene torch.

I wouldn't say I dislike his immediate family, I just don't have any feelings for them at all because my husband's sisters have never acknowledged my existence in any way and one of them really thought she was doing something by constantly turning our wedding picture to face the wall at my father-in-law's house, which is so petty and stupid, especially for someone in her 50s. I can't even be mad about it. Lol! I used to really like my father-in-law, but then he decided to cut off my husband for no reason a few years ago, so I'm not a huge fan. I don't dislike him, I just don't care to invest any emotional capital there. My husband's extended family is great, though, and I love all of them.

I'm not a big fan of my boyfriend family either, they can be rude, they are very noisy and different from my family, which isn't perfect of course but at least when we have guests we try to make them feel comfortable. Instead in his family, unfortunately, this isn't happening. Sometimes they start arguing about personal matters and they try to involve me, that is something that I don't like at all. Of course I'm faking the best I can but lately I'm just trying to avoid contact with them. I explained my boyfriend the reasons why I try to keep myself at distance, but he doesn't get it, I mean he gets super defensive saying things like "my family is the best family you will ever know, way better than yours" ah! That makes me laugh because it's clearly his ego talking and I usually ignore him and try to spend the less time with them, I simply don't want to be involved in a situation in which I don't feel comfortable in being myself. They are also very childish, like playing games, making fun of others - including myself - so noope, not a big fan. 😅

I like *most* of my husbands family.. me and my SIL are literally bffs and we talk every single day. Meanwhile my BIL just has a personality that I literally cannot tolerate. I’m pregnant right now so maybe I will be able to put up with it more afterwards but right now I struggle so hard not to be rude to him. My husband doesn’t think it’s fair that I don’t like him but nobody likes everyone they meet. my MIL isn’t the worst by any means but she’s a huge conspiracy theorist and sometimes I can’t handle it 🙈 But I didn’t marry my husband because of his family so 🤷🏻‍♀️ it is what it is.

I prefer his family over most of my family lol. The part of my family I enjoy being around, he does as well. But we grew up with them all so that might make a bit of difference. Our parents are best friends. Known them all for 18 yrs now. We actually live on the same property as his parents and his grandma and then his other grandma, 2 aunts and 2 uncles, cousin and her husband and their 2 kids are on the property across the horse field from us. Legit surrounded by his family.
