Is it safe driving to San Felipe?

My friends grandparents own a big vacation house on a private beach in San Felipe and she drives there a few times a year to visit. She wants me to drive down there with her for a vacation. Is it safe to drive to San Felipe mexico? She says it’s fine but I hear a lot of bad stories so it makes me nervous. I love to travel but have never been across any borders so I’m scared haha
