Finding out the gender

Any way to find out the gender early besides a blood test for Down Syndrome? Talked to a nurse at my prenatal appointment today and they don't do the Down Syndrome test with gender testing unless you fit the category to have it done.. I'm pretty upset because I was planning on finding out sooner rather than later and also making sure the baby will be ok :/
