Can boys have charm bracelets too?

K

So my husband has two siblings a sister with 3 kids (2 girls ages 9 and 3, and a boy age 6) and a brother. The brother lives out of town and visits maybe once a year and when he comes he buys the 9 year girl (his niece) a charm for her charm bracelet that he bought her when she was little. So this past weekend we were all out shopping and he decided to buy a charm bracelet and a charm for the 3 year old girl to continue the tradition. She was delighted and both girls picked out charms, but then the 6 year old boy asked his uncle if he could also get a charm bracelet too, to which the uncle replied “No, boys don’t wear charm bracelets.” He was very obviously disappointed and was sad the rest of the day, I could tell he was trying not to cry as his two sisters were giddy and showing everyone their new charms. The uncle did see this and ended up buying him a nautical knot type bracelet (I guess he found it more masculine). To which little 6 year old said, “thank you! Can I pick out charms for it too?” And of course he can’t. So he was disappointed still but didn’t make a big deal about it. The whole time his mom and dad were also making a big deal to him about how he’s a boy and boys don’t wear those blah blah blah

Like what is the big deal? Why can’t a boy wear a freaking charm bracelet and pick out charms? I feel so bad for my nephew being the only boy in between two sisters because the parents especially baby the girls and not him. Like how he’s not supposed to cry cause he’s a boy and his sisters get over all more love and affection. He’s six! He needs the same amount of affection as his sisters. I didn’t say anything the whole time because it wasn’t really my place as it was my brother in law buying gifts for his nieces but I maybe should have.

What do you think? Can a boy wear a charm bracelet? Or do you think in this case they were right?

I have 3 year old boy so things like this just bother me. I’m not even a liberal person and I do believe boys and girls are different but when it comes to stuff like this, what is the big deal?!
