Pineapple allergy ?

My 11 month old ate some pineapple. She was loving it until about 10 minutes after she started fussing and wiping at her mouth. It looked like there was shocks of pain. Her tongue seems to be a little swollen and it hurts when I touch it. I tried giving water or ice thinking it was just acid left in her mouth. She got a little sleepy. Is this a mild allergy? what do I do? Can’t get any advice from her pediatrician without making an entire walk in appointment and paying on the spot. Her doctors office sucks.

MOST people who react to pineapple are just sensitive to the enzyme and acidity, it’s not a true allergic reaction.  However, I’m allergic to pineapple and I get redness and swelling in my mouth and throat as well as sores in my mouth.  I wouldn’t feed it again until you’ve talked to the dr xx

My sister and I are both allergic, but we’ve never had a severe reaction to it. I’d just avoid it, have some benedryl on hand, and bring it up at her next appointment. Also, I think it’s pretty ridiculous that your dr doesn’t have on call hours for situations like this. I’d suggest double checking or maybe finding a new dr.

Definitely sounds like an allergic reaction. Pain, swelling, and drowsiness. Do not give benedryl, as you won’t know how babe is doing if they had a more severe reaction, since benedryl will knock them out. Children’s Zyrtec is what our allergist recommends. Based on that reaction, I’d make an appointment with a specialist and see if babe needs an epipen or not. They can do some allergy testing.

For me I would take her to been seen to make sure she is ok. As you said her tongue was swollen. I would worry about her throat an a little swollen too. In the end do what you think is right for her.

Pineapple burns my tongue and makes it itchy, that's the case with most people as pineapple contains bromelain which breaks down the proteins in your tongue. Unless there's hives or any trouble breathing it's likely just a regular reaction. It's why I haven't fed my 15m old raw pineapple yet.

It could be. My husband has a mild reaction to most fruits. He just gets slight swelling and itching on his tongue and lips. He doesn't have any throat swelling and it isn't a serious reaction for him. None of my three kids have had the same reaction and my husband didn't actually start having the issue until he was 30.
With your LO being so young and unable to tell you if her throat is closing up, I would call your pediatrician and ask about doing an allergy test or having a referral to someone who can do one.
