Is Birthing Class really necessary?

Question

Feeling very overwhelmed with the idea of going to birthing class this weekend. I feel like they aren't going to tell me anything I don't already know. Any insight is appreciated.

I knew a lot of the info, but my husband really got a lot out of it. He doesn't do as much reading as I do, and by that I mean NONE! Haha he relies on me for all information, so he liked getting it first hand.

I just took our birthing class. They totally didn't do it like the movies make it look. There was no getting in the floor and practicing breathing techniques. We practiced breathing techniques but only for about 3-5 minutes of the 9am-4pm class. The biggest most beneficial take away for us was the appreciation that my husband now has for the process and what my body is going through. Ever since the class he has done more around the house, telling me to take it easy and he keeps mentioning facts from the class. It's all very sweet, plus it made him feel more included I think. He has started talking to my belly more and likes to hold it and say goodnight to our little boy before I go to bed each night. Also, they taught how to give a hand massage and a back massage to help with visualization during birth. I'm totally going to be taking him up on that as much as possible 😄

Not necessarily for you since I'm sure you've done all your research but it's awesome for the daddy's to be! My husband has found it to be extremely informative and gives him a better understanding of what my body is going through which in turn makes him more compassionate and sympathetic! It's been great for us!

We're taking ours this Saturday.  Hubs has NO IDEA what to expect during delivery and his buddies have told him that he won't even want to be there.  He doesn't have a choice on that part, but I want him to be prepared for

Birthing can be helpful when you take a series. A one day class really won't give you much information. I recommend Bradley classes but they are 12 weeks long. They go over everything including recognizing the different stages of labor, when to leave for the hospital, warning signs, what to do in emergency situations, breathing and relaxation techniques, nutrition, what to expect during delivery, etc.

I didn't with my first, nor with this one, and I didn't feel like I missed out on anything or wasn't prepared. The pregnancy apps I used/use are so helpful and so are the many pregnancy websites out there. I think it depends on the kind of person you are if you feel like you want to go to them or not.

I'm not going to any prenatal classes. Its just one more thing to drive to and worry about. To me there's so much info out there and there's probably several YouTube videos. Id rather do It on my own time.

It's great for the daddy to be. Your body will know what to do but it's nice to have reassurance and to get a different perspective on things

Depends on if you're going all natural or going with an epidural. If you're going with an epidural I could see why a class isn't necessary.
