Rx meds in hospital bag?

Question

Do you pack your prescription medications and take them to the hospital? Or are they supplied there? I don’t think I was on anything besides a prenatal last two births, so I’m not sure. Any one have any insight?

As a nurse it’s always a little bit annoying when patients don’t pack their own medication and just assume the wards will have them. Especially ones that are time specific or critical. Sometimes it takes a while to get them ordered from pharmacy and pharmacy doesn’t always stock things. I would always take your own if the hospital/ward has them they can use their own stock and leave yours but at least you have them just incase. Especially if they are critical meds ( like epileptic meds for example)

I packed them and my own stool softeners got sick of asking and having to wait for a nurse to bring. They kept forgetting the stool softeners and you will want them lol I was super constipated  after

I would ask your doctor about the hospitals policy. I wasn't allowed to bring any outside medicine, including prenatals.

I was told not to last time but then they also didn’t get me my meds at all or on time when they did.  So I’m packing them this time and really don’t care what they have to say about it.  I have one that I get bad withdrawals from (a prescription allergy med) and they were about 6 hours late with it last time.  It threw off my schedule (I got it at 2am) and I was in misery with withdrawal effects constantly asking for it to be brought to me.  They also didn’t have my thyroid med dosage and said they’d order it in but never did.  I couldn’t even get Tylenol and Advil on time.  So I’m packing it all this time and don’t care what they say about it

We have to send all home medications to pharmacy for verification and it has to be ordered by the doctor. It’s highly frowned upon to take medication of your own (esp. that’s not prescribed during your admission) while in the hospital and forces nurses to write an incident report esp. because you don’t know if it interacts with anything new you’ve been prescribed. I would leave them in the car incase they don’t have them on stock there but definitely don’t go taking things you’re not prescribed
