Getting diagnosed?

How did you go about getting diagnosed? I'm wondering if I need to push my doctors more for testing.
I had a MC at 19 weeks and my TSH levels were 4.8. Going through my medical records, I see my thyroid was at 2.8 before we even TTC. Neither my doc or OB flagged it even though they knew we were TTC. I asked my OB and she just ordered another blood test, but said to wait til end of Jan (which would be 10 weeks post MC). I've been super lethargic since before the MC.

Check out thyroid.about.com or Stop the Tyroid Madness. They have pretty good patient guides. I don't know what the "optimal" range for TTC is but over 4.0 is still high even if you're not TTC. I'd suggest getting a referral to an endocrinologist.

I was diagnosed after going in for a monthly medication evaluation and my blood pressure was through the roof for the third month. So they did blood tests, and bam.

I've been reading books and posts by Dr. Amy Myers (amymyersmd.com), and here are the "optimal" values at which she and her patients feel best. I printed off her article and showed it to my doctor, in addition to the "Letter to Your Doctor" found in the book _Thyroid Power_ (checked out from my local library). After reading those, my doctor realized some of my numbers were in the "normal" range but were definitely not optimal, and she started me on Armour.

Optimal Values:

TSH 1-2 UIU/ML or lower (Armour or compounded T3 can artificially suppress TSH)
FT4 >1.1 NG/DL
FT3 > 3.2 PG/ML
RT3 less than a 10:1 ratio RT3:FT3
TPO – TgAb – < 4 IU/ML or negative
