I want to go off the pill but I’m not ready to get pregnant

My husband and I have been married for two and a half years and I have been on the bc pill for eight years. We have been talking about our TTC timeline the past couple of weeks and we are thinking we would like to start trying around this time next year. I want to go off of the pill at some point soon because I have experienced negative side effects the entire time I’ve been on it and because I want to give my body time to adjust before we actually start trying. However, I also do not want to get pregnant right now. I’ve had people tell me the chances of getting pregnant right away are slim but I’m aware there is always a chance and everyone is different. Can y’all share your experiences/suggestions on when I should consider throwing out the pills? Once I am off of it we plan to rely solely on pulling out and cycle tracking.

You should assume any immediate return to fertility once you quit. Many people do just fine with cycle tracking and the pull out method. As long as pregnancy would not be catastrophic, it is likely a fine plan. Best of luck!

I stopped the pill and it took me 8 months to get pregnant. I’m on the same boat, I want to get pregnant next year but I’m not sure when to stop the pill. Based on my last experience, if I stop now or soon, it could potentially happen in the time frame I want but, who knows how my body will act this time around. It’s like a roulette game 🤦🏻‍♀️

There is a new non-hormonal bc called phexxi (it is basically spermicide). Maybe talk to your dr about it? Otherwise condoms are always an option.

People definitely get pregnant from the pull out method/tracking. It’s only about 80%ish effective. It’s really only your decision to make. Look at the pros and cons and weigh the risks/benefits. I personally got off birth control in October, used the pull out method until May, conceived the first time we didn’t pull out in June/July. 2 of my friends got off birth control and conceived that next month. people always say it takes a while for couples to conceive, but that’s not always the case. Personally I’d only use pull out/tracking if I was okay with a slip up.
