Anyone tested positive for herpes? How do they test if you aren’t currently having an outbreak?

I’m 20.5 weeks pregnant, I’ve been tested for everything, but herpes by my ob.. all negative. They won’t test me for it because I’m not having an outbreak (I have had tiny sores pop up down there and go away the past year or so, so I’m 99% sure I have it.) I made an appt at a planned parenthood near me to get tested.. how do they do it?

Generally an outbreak needs to be present to test for it accurately which is probably why they don’t test you currently. I would definitely let your OB know you have had sores previously so they can be aware of this. I believe the greatest risk is if an outbreak is pregnant during labor at which point precautions may be taken or alternate birth plans initiated.

I am positive. I only had one outbreak since I found out almost 2/3 years ago. They can tell through bloodwork.

They’ll use test you when you have an outbreak. That’s weird that they won’t test you even though you had bumps down there before. They should test you because if you do get a positive result for herpes they’ll usually give you a pill on your 36 or 38 week appointment to take everyday till you give birth just to make sure you don’t pass it onto your baby. the only time they’ll be concerned is if you have a outbreak during labor which is then not good for the baby. But before you even give birth they check you down there as well to make sure your good to go.
