Nipt necessary??

Question

My doctor said I'm a very low risk pregnancy. Is it really a necessity to have it done? Its not cover by insurance, and I've heard it causes unnecessary stress because it isn't always correct. I would like some opinions from mommys that have had this done. I have 5 weeks to make a decision and I want to make the right one.

It eased my mind so much to have the NIPT test done for my first! I was classed as "low-risk" pregnancy but at the 20 week scan they found my baby was small (iugr) was very handy to have the NIPT test to confirm that nothing was likely wrong with my baby! She also delivered spontaneously at 35 weeks so just because of all that it was just good to have those results! 
I will definently be doing it this time around!

I’ve done it with all three of my girls. Not that it would have changed anything for us, but I am the type of person that likes to be prepared for things as much as possible. It just would have helped me better prepare for what’s to come. I plan on doing it this time as well! But it’s totally a personal preference! 💜

I think its up to you. If you had it done, would it change any further decisions? If not, then i think you can decline and that's OK.

I mean if its covered by your insurance, it can give you a heads up about any genetic abnormalities that could cause complications (also gives you sex of baby), but it really isn't necessary. Its not like it prevents any abnormalities, so it might be a burden of info situation. I did it because it was covered and I was already having a blood test, my first was totally healthy. I'd only do it again if it was covered by insurance🤷‍♀️

I don’t think the NIPT is necessary but I would get it if your insurance pays some of it. I plan to get it again with this pregnancy.
I had a low risk pregnancy with my son but chose to get it at 11w. It wasn’t until 20w when they were doing the anatomy scan that a couple things came up that looked suspicious. If we hadn’t done the NIPT we would have had to get an amnio done. I was happy to avoid that invasive procedure because we already had the information from the NIPT

I'm opting out for now, even though I'm higher risk due to my age (39). That said, I am doing the free testing that is covered (NT scan and IPS blood tests). These tests aren't as accurate as NIPT, but if any of these come up as higher risk, the doctor said they would just order the NIPT anyway, in which case it would be free.

I only got the nuchal translucency ultrasound with my son, but none of the NIPTblood tests and chose to do the same this time.

I am low risk and having it done. I want to be prepared and arm myself with information. Additionally, you may need more specialized care, level IV NICU, etc

It isn’t necessary but it’s an expensive test if insurance doesn’t cover any of it. 
Genetic testing and does tell u sex if u wanted.

I didn’t have it done with my first (21 months) because insurance wouldn’t cover it. My husband and I discussed it and decided it would change anything for us anyways and I would still have the baby. These tests are not 100% accurate anyways. He was born completely healthy. Ultrasounds can pick up on a lot of abnormalities too. This baby (pregnant almost 7 weeks) my insurance will cover it so I’ll probably have it done.. more or less because I want to find out the gender early lol.
