Nickname for Carl?

Carl is a family name and my boyfriend really wants to use it. I don’t love the name, but I respect the sentiment. My question is: do you think Cal could be used as nickname? Or is that just dumb? Any other nicknames for Carl?

If you don’t love it maybe use it as a middle name and compromise on something you both like for the first name. Nicknames are tough because they don’t always stick.

My 1 year old nephew is Carlton and goes by Carl. I think Carlisle is cute! (Doesn't have to be a nickname..  could be a long name with nickname Carl). Carlos, or Karl with a K are options too.

You could use the first and middle initials... We are going to name ours if it is a boy David a family name. But to help with saying David or Dave and have everyone look, we were think DW since it is the first and middle initials... But then all i can think of is "Dark Wing Duck" the 90s cartoon
