Why can’t I have sex during IUI cycle??

This is our first IUI cycle and our fertility clinic told us that we shouldn’t have unprotected sex until we are instructed to. I’m listening to them and following instructions obviously… but I’m just curious if anyone knows WHY we shouldn’t be having unprotected sex? I can’t find an answer online but I’ll ask my nurse at my next appointment.

I am not medical, but went through 6 IUI's last year and my guess is possibly a couple reasons. Is your IUI cycle medicated with Letrozole or clomid or otherwise? If so the doctor will want to scan you to ensure you respond appropriately to medication If too many dominant follicles are present, might not be safe to proceed with sex or IUI if you respond too well. Second and most important piece is timing is everything with an IUI. If you are using fresh sperm/not frozen, then man is supposed to abstain from sex or masturbating for at least 48 hours prior to IUI to have as strong a sample/high sperm count as possible. We were instructed to have sex to help seal the deal after the IUI.

Risk of infection. If you have to many follicles they will cancel the cycle due to a risk of multiples and they want to make sure you naturally wouldn't conceive to risk it.
