Do water filters actually filter water?

I don’t know how controversial this is, but what are your thoughts on water filters (example brita). Do they actually do what they say they do and remove chemicals and impurities from the water? Or is it just another ploy to take our money? 
Do you have one? Do you notice the difference?

Yes they do; it pays to get a good one. You can actually have your water tested (before and after) and you’ll know the real difference. I’m sure some are junk, just as anything else.

The water tastes different, so it has to be doing something. And not just "I've convinced myself the pitcher tastes different from the tap" but like I can tell when the filter needs to be changed because the water tastes different.

Most filters work, but they don't all work the same. It's important to know what you're trying to filter out of your water & what filter works best to do that. We have a whole home filter & the water tastes so much better. It also helps make sink, shower, & toilet cleaning easier.

Like anything it depends on the quality if the product. I bought a zero water filter system and can taste the difference. It also comes with a water tester so u can test for impurities and also helps u know when the filter needs changing.

Yes they do work. We don't use one anymore as we have a whole house system  but when we lived in and apartment we used one for all our water. I was skeptical  but when I made coffee and it had a skimmable layer of yuck on the top of it from the water and I ended up in the ER for dehydration from refusing to drink the water. We got one and the water no longer had a film on the top and it was actually drinkable.
