Has your kindergartner ever had a fit at school?

Second week of school and my 5 year old had a fit today at school. Refusing to participate, crying, saying no to the teacher. Had to go to timeout & no recess. Up until today she has had good behavior.
She's never been in a school environment before (no pre-K due to Covid) so this is all new to her.

Time out and taking away recess are incredibly dated practices.
I would discuss you schools behaviour management policy.

All I can say is don’t punish her! something is going on for her and she needs compassion and understanding. Her teachers need to work with you/her and taking away important and fun things like recess is so counter productive and archaic

My daughter stayed home till kindergarten too. She’s never had a fit though. But I think it’s probably pretty common. She may be having some anxiety about it.

My daughter doesn't start kindergarten for a couple more weeks but everyone keeps telling me to buckle up because they'll be really cranky after school for a while because they're not used to it. It's all new to them, new environment without their parents, new schedule, etc. Taking away recess was probably a bit much. I'd think it's just from being over stimulated

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear they handled it like that, it sounds like your kiddo is probably completely overwhelmed & overstimulated and could have used some kindness & compassion instead of punitive measures. 
My daughter is only 4.5 so not kindergarten age yet but I remember when my stepson started kindergarten he was coming home & having huge meltdowns several times a week. He has ADHD, anxiety, & some sensory issues but was undiagnosed at the time. We were kind of at a loss at what to do at 1st but after talking to my sister who’s a kindergarten teacher we realized that kindergarten is incredibly challenging in all ways, mentally, physically, & emotionally, they’re being asked to do way more than they ever have been before, it’s exhausting for them. We ended up moving up his bedtime, he had been going to bed between 8 & 8:30pm & we moved his bedtime up to 7:30pm on the dot. We also instituted “quiet time” after school, he would come home, have a snack, play on his IPad for 30 minutes & then have an hour of playing quietly in his room. It made a huge difference. 
In your case you may want earlier bedtime & maybe a heartier breakfast in the morning since maybe part of the meltdown was also lagging energy & getting “hangry” It may take trying a few different adjustments to get your kiddo what they need. It should also just get better w/ time, it’s a big adjustment especially for a kiddo who wasn’t in preschool beforehand. Good luck, I’m definitely dreading a little bit when my daughter goes to kindergarten in the 2022/2023 school year!
