Surgery

My fiance got acl knee surgery in the beginning of August. He's doing much better now but still working on it. Has anyone experienced their partner or themselves having surgery while being with someone? Was there any depression or distance in the relationship? No intimacy? If so can anyone give any advice please? His progress is getting better and is doing physical therapy. And I don't want to stress him out by asking these questions because he shuts down when I do.
