Yes. Only because I live in a gated community, so anytime there's a knock it's a neighbor or delivery. I check first, just to be sure, but I'm not as cautious as I will be when we move from here.

My dog would alert me well before they got up to my door but I would never open it without checking

Generally no, but not because of fear.  Our neighbour is irritating af and knocks 20 times a day.   I get sick of it getting my dog barking and try to ignore her.   Doesn't really help because she'll start looking in Windows or standing outside yelling "neighbour, hey neighbour."

There is a crazy amount of people that open the door without looking first and are surprised to see me and others just yell come in. I have to yell 'I'm not coming in, you don't know me!' way way too many times. Honestly be careful. Don't assume it's your friend who your expecting. It may not be a JW you yell come in to next time. It's not safe!! 
I always check who's at the door from a place they won't know I'm looking so that I can just not answer the door if I don't want to.

Umm I guess there is a cultural difference. I open the door every time, no matter if I'm alone or not, or if it's unexpected.

There is literally nothing bad that could happen from opening your own door as long as it's daytime and it's not anyone acting suspicious. And I've never even heard of anything happening. That's probably just the difference between Europe and USA 😊

Well, everyone we know barges right in and starts yelling (for some reason the basement is the main entrance, so we have plenty of warning before they get upstairs), so I would probably look first.
