Can yoga help with severe lower back pain?

Can yoga help with lower back pain? I’m needing to try something. I’m only 27, already see a chiropractor that specializes in back pain but lately it’s not enough. My pain is so bad that I can’t bend down correctly to get dressed and sometimes the pain can take my breath away. My chiropractor has given me a few stretches to do, but they don’t seem to help much.

My problem started 5 years ago and we aren’t completely sure why (We think it was from moving and lifting a lot of heavy stuff as well as sleeping on very, very old mattress. The chiropractor was able to alleviate my pain and for a long time it was fine.

In July I was rear ended and it seems to have made my back pain worse. I’ve noticed my hips are tighter (sorry for the TMI but trying to be on top with my husband is hard Bc it’s like my legs can’t stretch like that anymore all of a sudden) and my lower back is extremely stiff and sore, especially first thing in the morning.

I’m really hoping starting yoga is a step in the right direction to helping my problem.
