Teething and Sleep Problems?

My baby boy is 8 months old and has 4 top teeth coming in. One broke through 3-4 days ago and the other 3 are not far behind. During the day, he is his normal cheerful self with no fussing or crying. He just chews on everything for relief. Last night, however, was rough. He woke up crying every 2-3 hours and my thought is it's probably because he is teething, but I'm not really sure. His sleep didn't change when his bottom two teeth came in so this is completely new for us. For the past week or two he has also been waking up once in the middle of the night, which came as a surprise to me because previously he was sleeping through the night. Has anyone else experienced this when their babies were teething? Is it normal and is there anything I can do to help him? But most importantly, is this sleep disruption temporary and he'll eventually go back to sleeping through the night once his teeth come in? (Assuming that is what's causing the disruption in the first place, of course) I was already missing having a baby who slept through the night, but now I really am after last night's experience.
