How do I discipline a 12 month old?

Question

Without being mean, gentle parenting or is he too young to be disciplined?
He has a lot of temper tantrums if he doesn’t get his own way. He won’t sit in his highchair to eat his food nor will he sit nicely to eat on the sofa.
He pulls hair and is now starting to bite me and his dad. But I’m sure it’s down to teething

I may get hate for this bit for instance when he pinches or bites, he gets his hand slapped. 
Yes it hurts his feelings but he will learn not to hurt people

Pediatric therapist here: he is definitely capable of understanding basic right and wrong actions now at this age. So you can for sure start teaching those social skills, helping with emotional regulation, and providing positive reinforcement for good behaviors. 😊 a great way to teach appropriate social skills are to teach them when the child is calm. Practice gentle kisses instead of biting with baby dolls, for example. When it comes to a negative behavior, present the behavior you want instead of the one you don’t. For example; instead of “dont hit,” try “show me calm hands.” You may have to model what you want or even physically help his hands be safe, but it doesn’t have to be aggressive on your end to be effective. Timers are also great for transitions and tolerating tasks kids don’t want to do. Helping them understand that the unwanted task will end and reinforce with a positive experience after. Again, don’t just use timers when in a negative situation, start during play to introduce the concepts. All of us learn better when we are calm and happy than when we are upset. Hope these tips help! 
Remember: big emotions are ok but big behaviors are not, and as the parent you know your kiddo best and where their development is. It is OKAY to set boundaries and enforce them consistently. It doesn’t make you a bad parent or abusive or neglectful to be firm or even use your body to help them control their body.  Discipline is important and kids thrive with it. It doesn’t have to be painful or traumatic for either of you.

Listen to Janet Lansbury’s podcast “Unruffled”. It goes through many examples of ways to set boundaries with your child while validating his emotions. She also has a few books that go over different things if you want to get seeping into it. I also recommend the book How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk. It’s geared for a variety of ages, but would be helpful o start implementing now. There’s even a “little kids” version geared for kids 2-7 years old. 
Honestly 12 months is a little too young for a kid to fully understand his own behavior is wrong, but it’s never too early for you to set safety boundaries, like no hitting/biting. I would not use any hitting/spanking/corporal punishment, as studies show it IS harmful and ultimately ineffective. Also it’s super illogical, like let me hit to you to show you that hitting isn’t allowed. 🙄

My husband says I'm soft but tbh i dont do anything except time out or stand in the corner. My husband had a very different upbringing than i did. So his parenting is not the same. I am the type to talk to my children first in a soft tone. Get their attention by clapping my hands. I get their eye contact. They know i am serious but tbh its a very light punishment. My 2 year old is absolutely a wild one. I call her my feral child lol. She tests this mama everyday. Idk i am pretty much im the same boat bc i dont like to see my girls cry or be upset.

Be persistent and when he does something he’s not supposed to tell him know in a stern voice. I didn’t do this with my daughter and she’s a hell cat but I did with my son and he listens better than my 2 year old 🤦🏻‍♀️
