Correcting?

Ok moms and/or dads what age did you find appropriate to start correcting your child and how did you do it? 
Here is my thing my son is about to be one in two weeks but he is incredibly smart he understands way more than people give him credit for but he is still a baby I know that and he doesn't understand right from wrong but I have started slightly correcting him I started months ago I mean when I tell him something like stop or no or anything like that he does it so when he grabbing things like the trash can or something and I tell him stop and he keeps doing it I will lightly pop his hand and tell him to not do it and some people seem to think I'm being a bad mom because I pop his hand and tell him no they say he is to young to be corrected.
So what do y'all think? am I wrong?

You're doing fine!!! Seriously. Stop worrying what other people say. You raise your kids the way you want too! If a pop on the hand is working and you find it effective and harmless, then you continue with the technique.

I don't believe in hitting children. Teaching them patience and listening skills is a better route. Google kind ways to teach kids to obey you.

I think they're capable of understanding a lot more than they're given credit for - and certainly a huge amount more than they can communicate.  A friend of mine taught her baby girl sign language from birth and by 9 months she could sign when she needed to be changed or if she wanted food or had enough.

On the other end of the scale my nephew is almost 2 and his mom seems to think that since he can't talk much he doesn't understand anything and it's not worth explaining anything to him. When he's at my house and I say 'Don't pull the ornaments on the tree - they can break and hurt you' they mock me for talking to him and explaining to him.

Regardless of if they understand reasoning,  from birth they can learn through simple conditioning (the same way rats and cockroaches can be trained to navigate a maze or perform other tasks or how you train a puppy). If a behaviour regularly results in a stimuli they don't like they will be put off that behaviour.  If a behaviour results in positive stimuli (getting what they want) it'll be reinforced and they'll keep doing it.

We started when our son started to crawl and get into things he's not supposed to.  He's very smart and doesn't take long for him to figure things out. I'll tell him no that's not yours or no put that back. He will for a second and wait until you are not looking and grab it again. He gets told twice after that it's a pop on the hand or butt.

As soon as a child begins to display basic language communications kills, you should start correcting them. The sooner the better, IMO.

U correct them as soon as they do something you want them to not do.. how you choose to correct your child should of course be age appropriate.  But even babies... If you pull my hair I'll say no no and take my hair out of their hand and give them something else to play with.  Now that my daughter is 4 she pretty much knows when she is doing something inappropriate and I'll give her a warning if she still doesn't listen then I go from there depending on the situation.

I will start teaching my child at about 1 . I'll start with telling them no and redirecting their attention to something positive. But if that doesn't work, a firm no and a light pop on the hand will be in place.

It was around one. Our process: we warn her not to do something, then tell her she'll get a correction if she disobeys, then correct her with a quick swat to the upper thigh, then remind her why we did it. It works pretty well and she understands.
