Castor oil for labor?

Hi everybody, so I've heard that castor oil can help start or speed up labor or make it easier for baby to come out. Is this true? Has anyone used it and did it help?

Castor oil can cause uterin contractions, HOWEVER is dangerous for baby and puts them at risk of passing meconium before birth, which can get into their lungs and cause significant breathing issues. My second (born last November) passed meconium during labor for other unrelated stress issues that happened during the labor process which resulted in dropped heart rate, and fetal stress, and immediately the brought in nicu staff and said that it is hospital policy that nicu is in the room at the time of delivery if meconium is present due to its risks. Thankfully my girl didn’t need any kind of nicu attention and they ended up being there just as a precaution, but I wouldn’t do anything (like castor oil) that has the risk of potential harm to baby. Not to mention risk dehydration to mom caused my digestive distress like excessive diarrhea and vomiting. Castor oil is an extremely outdated self-induction method and if it is being recommended to you by a professional, then that individual should be questioned. It’s an absolute no go for self inducing. I did it with both of my kids, worked both times. However, I would not recommend it!!! When your body is ready, you’ll go into labor. I regret doing it! My contractions were HORRIBLE!!!

A lot of midwives are the ones who recommend the castor oil. The theory is that by the castor oil causing bowel movements (intestinal contractions) it in turn causes uterine contractions. But sometimes it won’t work and you’ll just end up having massive diarrhea and not go into labor 😂.

It's a wives tale and can make baby have a bowel movement before/during birth and you don't want them to breathe that in
