How long to labor at home?

So I started having some mild contractions after having strong Braxton Hicks consistently all weekend. Tonight they kicked up a notch and started to feel like real contractions, they started to burn in my lower abdomen and cause a lot of back pain. They started 6 mins apart. We had sex to try and help things along and then contractions were pretty strong and 3-4 mins apart. We got our stuff packed and by the door but I wanted to wait and make sure they actually stuck around, I had pre labor all day Friday and it stopped so I’m a little skeptical. Well I laid down and tried to rest during them, they got pretty strong for awhile, but after laying down for an hour they calmed down a bit and moved more to 5-6 mins apart. Now they are a little more mild so I got up and started walking around and now they are back to 3 mins apart and she’s definitely lower, I’m getting alot of shooting pains going down the back of my thighs and I can feel her head lower. When do you guys think it’s safe to do in? It’s my third baby and I’m 40 mins away from the hospital but I’m so worried about my contractions stopping or slowing down and getting sent home. lol

Rule of thumb I say is if you can no longer walk, speak or do a normal activity then it is intense enough to go in! The 5-1-1 rule is terrible because not everyone’s contractions are the same. Judge based on intensity. If you can’t speak and have to fully concentrate on getting through a contraction then head to hospital!

I hit the 5-1-1 rule, but I waited until it was 4-1-1 to go. I was induced with my first and got to go into labor naturally this time around. We're about 40 mins out from the hospital. I was only 2-3 cm. They offered me to stay and be checked again in 2 hrs but I decided to labor down at home. Thank goodness I did. It took 3 days before I kicked into active labor. Contractions woke me up shortly after midnight. I thought it was another fluke. Woke my hubs up at 1 like this is real. Didn't even time them this time but I couldn't talk through them. Got my MIL here to sit with our daughter at 1:30. We got to the hospital shortly after 2. Covid swab and check. I was 4-5 cm with a bulging bag. Got admitted to a room at 3:28. They asked some questions and got us settled in. I wasn't in a ton of pain and figured we had hours to go. I was wrong. Said I needed to push. They checked me. 8-9 cm. Said fight the urge. Gonna break your water and give it a few contractions to hit 10 and have a baby. He was born at 4:21 am. So I had time to get to the hospital but I didn't have any time for pain meds. I screamed him out of me.

With my first, even though I had hit the 5-1-1 rule hours prior, it was the growing intensity over many hours at home that confirmed it. I was able to sleep for two hours and the pain woke me up, and then I hopped in the shower and got myself ready and during every contraction I would have to stop and lean on something until it passed. I hit the 5-1-1 rule at 38 weeks of this pregnancy (actually went on for 10 hours), but I just went to sleep lol. I was tired and if it wasn’t getting too uncomfortable, I wasn’t going to waste my time. I’m 39+3 today so obviously I was right and that was pre labor.
