I'm not sure what else he could have said. He's right, if you're unhappy with yourself you need to be the one to change that. Not necessarily change yourself physically but change your mindset too. He has no problem with you, and when you have such a problem with yourself nothing he says or does will validate you. You do need to change yourself.

I mean my husband has said the same thing to me. He can only complement me so much, but i was so unhappy with myself that I did need to change myself for myself. His compliments didn't mean anything to me until I did because I was happy with myself and felt the confidence. So yeah it might be brutal to hear, but he is right.
