Best pain medication during labor?

What ratings would you give the pain medications during labor? Which one would you recommend to a first time mom?

So I was induced with my daughter and went with the epidural. It was 😘 fantastic. I was allowed to go into labor naturally with my son and was talking pain management for later on thinking I had a long way to go. She said I could do gas, some shot that acts like an epidural but only lasts for not very long and you can only get it once every I don't remember the time frame, or the epidural. Legit after asking about pain management options I said I had to push and ended up giving birth without pain meds. It all happened really fast and I just didn't have as much time as I thought I did. I managed contractions to that point through just breathing.

Each one has its benefits and drawbacks. Some quick facts: 
IV pain meds like fentanyl or morphine are very effective for the first dose they’re given and last about an hour with noticeable effects on pain within 15 seconds on average.  They can only be given every few hours so your dose will wear off before you can get another (so it’s really about timing.) The opioid medicine does cross the placenta to the baby and baby will need to be monitored for side effects. Obviously this is not an appropriate choice for people who struggle with addiction.
nitrous oxide is a gas you can inhale (laughing gas) during an actual contraction. You pull a mask to your face and inhale while you’re contracting and then remove the mask when it’s done. Some women hate how it makes them feel and some love it. It’s very safe for baby but only slightly decreases pain for mom. Takes the edge off more so, but good if you’re trying to stay more on the natural side of things and directly control the amount of pain relief you get. 
Epidural is the most commonly used method and allows for partial to all pain reduction depending on how well it’s placed. Many women who receive it have more productive contractions and labor after receiving it or are able to rest/ nap before it’s time to push. The downside is unless you have a walking kind you’re more limited in your movement. There is also the possibility of side effects like low blood pressure and back pain after delivery. The epidural takes on average 45 mins to administer and begin working, so it’s not a very quick procedure. But it usually wears off quickly after birth. Very safe for baby but may lead to longer pushing times if you can’t feel anything which has some risks as well

Depends. If you want to roam and be as natural as possible, you can ask for gas. 
If you want no pain, epidural.
