Removing Safety Doorknobs?

Question

Hi all,
Have any of you removed your safety knobs from your toddlers bedrooms? If so, when? How did that transition go?
We are considering removing it to try overnight potty training, but I’m so scared of him getting into things that he shouldn’t be at night while everyone is sleeping.

We don’t put a safety knob on his door, but we do it to closets and bathrooms and a lock on our hallways cabinet and put up a gate at the stairs. So he can come into our room, or hang out in the hallways .

I see! I didn’t realize safety knobs were not that commonly used. We lived in a three story townhouse in which he could climb the banister and drop all the way to the first floor, so for us it was a necessity. That AND a gate. We’ve since moved to a one-story, so I suppose we’ve been using it out of habit versus a dire need.
Needless to say, we removed the safety knob a week ago. He gets up almost every single night and wanders the house in pitch dark. My door is open right next to his, and he doesn’t come in. He just explores.
I wake up every time because he is really noisy about opening his door lol. 
I wait a few minutes to see what he would do. I found him two nights ago sitting on the couch in absolute silence and darkness.  Sometimes, he will go back to sleep if we urge him, but we usually have to go with him or take him to our bed, which he typically doesn’t need.
I’ve been working on explaining that his purple night light in his room means “good night” and when it turns orange it is “good morning.”
It seemed to work for the first time last night because he came out, wandered for like 5 minutes in the dark, then went back to his room and started reading his books. 
I hope that continues or that he just stops coming out.

Never used safety doorknobs and she has never tried to get out of her room. If she needs to go potty (rare) she just yells for us.

don’t have one on his door but he’s never tried to leave the room at night... if he did i would hear it on the monitor

We never used them but we do have a gate outside her bedroom door so she can't get out. That being said she is fully potty trained. She doesn't usually have to go to the bathroom over night but the few times she has she just calls us and says she has to go potty. We hear her through the monitor, get her and take her to the bathroom.

We’ve never had safety knobs on and it’s never been a problem 🤷🏻‍♀️ 
I’ve heard of little things that hang on their door that can alert your phone if the doors open. I don’t know what it’s called since I’ve never used it, but Google could probably help.
