So scared...

I'm getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. My mum can't come in with me because of COVID rules and I'm 18 and legally an adult. I'm almost 18 and a half, but that doesn't mean I'm anywhere near being ready to go in for surgery by myself. My anxiety is through the roof at the moment and I'm so nervous and scared that I have to go in by myself. I may come across as a big baby, but I need to have someone there to with me who understands what is going on. I've never had surgery before and I'm freaking out 😭😭

Sounds like this a good thing for you. It’s time you start trusting yourself, ask the questions and inform yourself. You can do this!

Lots of people are scared of surgery and they are also scared of the dentist too. What you are having is a very common operation, lots of people have their wisdom teeth removed daily. My advice is to talk to the staff and explain its your first surgery and your scared. They are used to this and they will talk you through everything they are doing and help you to calm down.

I actually feel better with mum there. And she knows what to do and what to expect whereas I don't

Unfortunately its just the way it is atm. You can do this though and quite honestly sometimes its better to be alone as parents can make the situation seem loads worse than it actually is.

I know it's very common, but I've never really done anything without my mum there including doctors appointments. I'm not good with communicating how I'm feeling. And I'm scared to go in without someone

Ask for laughing gas in addition to the injectable pain block. A few deep breaths and you won't care what's happening and who is in the room...or not in the room with you. Im very anxious...like you but whenever i have dental work, that's the first thing I ask for. I've actually been so euphoric that I've legit giggled during a prior extraction. There is no funny feeling or "hangover" with that either. Once they remove the mask, within 30 seconds you are back to yourself with no residuals. Best invention ever. Good luck.

Thankyou a lot for this. I'm not going to be awake as I'm going under anaesthesia. I've gotta get an injection in my hand and I'm super nervous for that. I was already freaking out having the surgery done, but I found out the night before that I have to be at the hospital by 7:30am, I need to be COVID tested there (which I'm also nervous about because I've never had one yet) and I am not allowed anyone in with me. I can't have anyone waiting with me or when I wake up

Update:I got it done and I'm home. I came home from hospital about 9 hours ago. It was the most traumatic thing I've ever done. Let's just say, they gave me too much anesthetic which knocked me out in about 5 seconds. I woke up in the operating room with an oxygen mask on and i was shaking. I had possibly convulsed from what the nurses were saying. They didn't take into consideration my height and weight (160cm, 45kg) with the anesthetic which is why the first dose knocked me out so quick. They didn't put it in the record so I'm not 100% sure on what actually happened. But I remember the nurse saying they have to update mum on what just happened and they didn't do that. Then when I was in recovery waiting to see the doctor before I could leave, I fainted. I'm so glad I got all 4 out at once because there's no way I'm ever doing that again
