My 3.5 year old asked “what does it mean when people die?”

How would you respond? She picked this up at daycare. Luckily we have not had any family members or pets die in her life so far. Wasn’t expecting to answer this question so young.

I would just be as honest as you can with a 3 year old. Explain that just like the trees and plants and animals when we die we become a part of the earth. No need to go too deep into it

In our funeral homes in New Zealand we recommend books for children. May be easier to have a book as it’s so hard to get young children to grasp death. Not that they should have to or need to so young but we’re very open with death in New Zealand and so for our children they’re very exposed to it in our culture.
