What does a contraction feel like?

I’m getting a few tightenings in my tummy but not sure if it’s just some kicks.

Braxton hicks are the tightening of your stomach/uterus, but not painful. They are practice contractions, getting ready for labor.
True, working contractions are intense period cramps. They last 45-60 seconds. When you get into active labor is when I suggest timing them. Active labor is where the contractions take your breath away. You have to drop whatever you’re doing and breathe/sway through them. 
I ignore early labor completely, because it is so hard to tell if something is happening and it keeps you on edge and anxious. That’s why I only count labor from when I actively start working.

So mine always started as light cramping in my lower abdomen. Kind of felt like gas pains

it's  always a bit hard to describe thise early contractions, I would  say it feels like really light period cramps..kinda in your back and also radiates to the front and it will come and go.
Just keep timing them and see if it starts to feel stronger and closer together. 
And when it's  really bad you'll  know cause you'll  100% need support from partner and you won't  be able  to talk through them.
That's  how it is for the most part! of course it can be slightly  different for everyone.
And most importantly trust your gut! if it says it's  time to go to hospital just go
