Child support

I know it's different everywhere, but I have a 6 year old girl, the dad was never involved and I'm just now going for child support. I called them today and they said they will be sending out a form to establish paternity. Does anyone know what this is? And how can I find out if the father already knows I'm after child support? If he knows I'm after it, he may try to contact me to get me to stop
