I don’t have the grades for university - now what?

So I’m 26 and when I was in high school, I wasn’t stupid, but I didn’t apply myself. I was actually kind of troubled and didn’t care about anything. I only graduated with a 2.7 GPA. I’m much different now. I love learning and I would love to earn a degree in psychology. However… I don’t think ANY universities will accept me with my past in HS. I have heard of starting at comm. college, earning an associates, and transferring to uni - but I don’t really know how that works? I’m just really lost and don’t have that much guidance. Any ideas?
Also, can I still take SAT/ACT ?

I would def go to community college and get your general Ed out of the way as well as taking the required courses for your major. Also check the university you would like to apply too and check their transfer student requirements to see what classes you need for your major before transferring. If you go full time to your community college it should be around 2 years, and then when you transfer it will be an additional 2 years for your Bachelors Degree of going full time. 
An associates degree is a total of 60 units and a bachelors degree is a total of 120 units. Good luck!

Since it’s been so long, they may not even care as much about your grades. I know they didn’t when I applied 5 years later.

1. Contact your high school and request 2 copies of your official transcript. It will cost a small amount of money but it's better to have an extra copy just in case. 
2. Call your community college of choice to schedule an admissions appointment. If you check the school website it will most likely have a checklist and paperwork to complete beforehand.
3. Look up FAFSA online and fill out the form to apply for financial aid (grants and loans- grants equal free money)
4. After your admissions appointment they will schedule a time for you to take assessments for math and english. That will determine which classes you will have to start with since there has been so much time after graduated high school. 
5. Start with "basics" meaning english, math, science, history, and government. 
6. First semester I would recommend starting with 1 or 2 classes and then easing your way to a full time schedule if that's what you want. 
7. Ask lots of questions and find a study schedule that works for you. It's easy for schoolwork to snowball. 
I started school around your age and it took me 7 years to get a 2 year degree. I made A LOT of mistakes and got a lot of bad advice from friends and careless advisors. You can do this and it's so worth it!

I’d look into community college. It’s cheaper and usually a better option for the non-traditional student. It’s also a good stepping stone to get you prepared for university once you finish your AA. Since it sounds like you already know what you want to major in, I’d check out a couple of psychology programs and see what pre-requisites are needed to enroll in the program then meet with a guidance counselor at the community college you plan to attend to map out a 2 year plan. I completed my AA in conjunction with my last 2 years of high school and was better prepared for university than my friends who went straight to university after high school. Community college tends to offer more support which can be beneficial to anyone. Best of luck 😀

Make an appointment with a community college admissions advisor so they can guide you. I will say this, if u r looking to earn a descent living w a psychology degree new in the field, u will need more than a bachelors degree. 
Make sure u aren’t just captivated by the study but instead really research what the job market is like and what that major or degree will allow u to earn 2 years, 5 years and more into the career. 
I’d actually encourage u to go into the trades if u want to earn more sooner without getting into too much debt…community college usually offers trade school too.

Start community college. It's also cheaper and easier to transition after a hiatus from the educational system and best to transition to a university after. It's automatic acceptance at most after you earn an AA or AS. Some programs fulfill credits you earn a certificate as with the courses you take for an AA.

Go to community College for the first 2 years to take your core classes. Most community colleges only offer associates degrees, at least in my state. I know a few people who transferred out of community to uni. But beware, unis are drastically more expensive. Community College averages $500 a class over here per semester, while our local universities(college town, we have like 20 different College brands) are $1200 a semester per class. So there is a ton to think about. If you got an associates you could be a high school guidance counselor, make about 60k off of a two year degree which is fairly good. 60k in America affords a 160k loan, 2 cars, and a Vacation once a year. And financial stability as far as bills and food goes.
