Controlled separation

Has anyone gone through a controlled/experimental separation? My marriage counselor suggested one after my husband had an emotional affair and is unsure if he wants to remain married. We are in the process of negotiating our “agreement” and I’m wondering if anyone else went through this type of separation and what were some of the terms. We have a four year old and can’t agree on how much time to split vs dating.
