How much of weight gain is fat in pregnancy?

I’ve gained like 40 pounds this pregnancy. I genuinely was so shooked when i found that out because besides my huge bump, i feel like my body doesn’t look that drastically different. my face and legs look a bit bigger, but definitely not 40 pounds bigger. i’m so shocked. did i really gain 40 pounds of fat??

It’s is definitely not all fat. Figure at birth a baby weighs about 8 lbs, placenta weighs about 2 lbs, you have about 2 lbs of amniotic fluid, 3-4 lbs of retained water, 3-4 lbs of extra blood supply, your uterus and breasts grow so that’s another 3-4 lbs, and then retained fat. Obviously these are just estimates and vary person to person. But no, you didn’t gain 40 lbs of fat.

About 20 by the end is generally baby, water, placenta, extra blood etc...
But the rest is not considered "fat" also.
The overall gain is actually not that important, the teend of gaining is and your doctor should be monitoring it. If doc is not worried, you should not be.
