Can you deny a Pap?

Question

I’ll be 18’weeks Monday when I have my check up with my OB. 
She didn’t wanna do a pap all my other appointments due to being high risk for miscarriage she kept saying don’t worry about it. 
Last appointment she mentioned maybe doing it this appointment and being 18’weeks I’d rather just wait until after birth. I don’t wanna mess with my cervix, paps have Been normal every time.

You can literally deny anything you want. You can even refuse to go to an OB altogether.🤯

You have to be your advocate. You absolutely have a right to deny. I’m learning that we people tend to go along with the medical professionals too easily, and we have to remember they are PRACTICING physicians. Do your research, and always ask questions. Don’t be afraid to speak up

Yes you can deny it. I was due for one at a recent appointment and I told her I wasn’t mentally prepared for that. She said “that’s okay we will wait until after the baby is born” such a relief lol

They wanted to give me a pap at my first OB appointment and I just said, “I’d prefer to wait till after birth.” They didn’t push at all and were totally chill with my decision. Just tell them you want to wait.

Yes you can always deny a medical procedure of any kind. It’s your body and you have to give consent. I will not be getting a pap in my pregnant even though they keep asking. I also will not be getting routinecervical checks. These procedures significantly increase your risk of an infection during pregnancy and labor, and those statistics do not provide enough of a risk/benefit ratio to me. If I have cancerous cells in a pap, that cannot be treated until after pregnancy anyway. And cervical checks actually do not tell them anything about when you will be going into labor or when you will be birthing a baby. They can provide information that could be helpful in certain scenarios that I would agree to  for example if I was showing potential signs of very early preterm labor then I might consider getting a cervical check just to see if I had actually started dilating or not - more likely I would request an ultrasound - They have been able to visualize it very clearly that way without the infection risk. During labor cervical checks are generally considered routine and not necessary, and each time the data is clear about infection risk increasing for you and your baby.
Long answer lol… but bottom line is no matter what, you can ALWAYS refuse medical procedures regardless of how pushy a doctor is about them!!

In the uk they won’t do it until you give birth. I was due to have mine in December/January but found out I was pregnant. So they told me they prefer to wait until your 12 weeks postpartum.

Im pretty sure it’s not recommended after a certain number of weeks. I had was due for mine about 2-3 months into my pregnancy and I deferred until my 6 week pp appointment.

I did one at like 14 weeks, they used a different type of swab and didn’t enter the cervix as deep as usual the swab prevents that. It was was less uncomfortable than not preggo. Also had no issues after or cramping. If you don’t want to that is totally up to you ☺️ doc can’t force anything on you.
